The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back.   The wooden frame includes a hanging wire for easy mounting on your wall (see photo on the left).

Vintage Iron Compass Floating Over White by YoPedro

This is one of those devices a lot of people learned to use as a kid, but never really had a lot of use for in their adult lives. This particular unit is made of iron and brass. It is a real solid tool, and while it is almost crudely formed, it is quite solid in its construction.

It is deceptively heavy, a real substantial piece of equipment. Up along the edge near the top, it reads, "FRANCE", I like to think it gives this tool a touch of elegance in such a rough form. -YoPedro
